Essential Flow assumes that when work is being done by multiple people (or groups of people) and goes through multiple steps, that then there will be one person (or group) that is the most heavily loaded resource.
The step in the chain of work that is performed by the most heavily loaded resource becomes the constraint for the whole process. The whole process cannot go any faster than the most heavily loaded step can be performed. If the constraining step slows down, it will slow the whole process down.
To find the constraint in your work process Essential Flow calculates the load on all the people (or groups) that work on the different steps. The constraint is the person (or group) that is, on average, the most heavily loaded.
Questions
How many persons (or groups) does the average work process flow through in your company ?
What is the average number of steps or phases that a work process goes through in your company?
Would you have access to historical data that would help you to calculate which resource is the constraint?
